Computer Updates - In order to protect your computer you
must update it at least once per month.
- To save
bandwidth, schedule update for Tuesday instead of daily and pick a time
late in the afternoon when bandwidth (school computers) usage is
low.
- Microsoft patch Tuesday is the second Tuesday of
the month so frequent update checks are seldom necessary.
- Always set
your computer to update automatically and allow it to do so. You should have a very compelling reason
not to update system files.
- Update Adobe
Flash when prompted to do so. (Look
for check-boxes that give permission to install tool-bars, most tool-bars
just take up screen space and serve no useful purpose.) Some (not Adobe) contain Malicious
Software.
- Update Adobe Acrobat to
the latest version. (Again look for
check boxes)
Setting up Microsoft
updates:
Windows XP – to set updates, right click My Computer, select properties and go to the update tab.
Windows 7 or Vista – go
to the Control Panel and in the search box type update. Go to “Windows Update”. Then on the left side select change settings
and reset your time and day. Update time
is 3:00 AM by default and many computers are shut down at that time, this
pushes the update into daytime which hogs valuable bandwidth during the busy
part of the day.
