6th Grade Reading Curriculum
Map
August 2005-May2006
This is a shortened version of our reading skills for 6th grade. Below is a map of what we will be covering each week in reading. We will be covering a wide range of skills each week in reading. This information is just to give you an idea of what we are covering in class.
S1. Vocabulary- The student will develop and expand knowledge of words and word meaning to increase vocabulary.
1. Words in Context (context clues, similes, multiple meaning words)
2. Word origins (foreign word meanings, root words, less common roots)
3. Using Resource Materials and Aids (glossary, dictionary ,thesaurus)
S2. Fluency- The student will identify words rapidly so that attention is directed at the meaning of the text.
S3. Comprehension/Critical Literacy- The student will interact with the words and concepts in the text to construct an appropriate meaning.
1. Literal Understanding (pre-reading strategies, main ideas, cause & effect, chronology..)
2. Inferences and Interpretation (draw inferences, conclusions, interpret and respond creatively)
3. Summary and Generalization (summarize and paraphrase, make generalizations, timelines)
4. Analysis and Evaluation (believability of main problem, conflict, contrast, cause & effect, fact & opinion)
5. Monitoring and Correction Strategies (rereading portions, clarifying meaning, adjust reading rates)
S4. Literature-The student will read, construct meaning, and respond to a wide variety of literary forms.
1. Literary Genres (short story, novel, drama, poetry, nonfiction, autobiographies, fables, myths,etc)
2. Literary Elements (identify fiction, plot, conflict, characters, setting, etc)
3. Figurative Language and Sound Devices ( figurative language, sound devices, poetic styles, literary devices)
4. Literary Works ( analyze and evaluate historical and cultural works, as well as settings/themes)
S5. Research and Information- The student will conduct research and organize information.
1. Accessing Information (card catalogs, other electronic databases, using printed text to locate info)
2. Interpreting Information (outlines, graphic organizers, note cards, identify credits, summarize for research paper)
